If you have been told by your dentist that you have periodontal disease—-don’t worry, you are not alone. It is estimated that of Americans, 80% are currently suffering from some stage/form of gum disease.
The term Periodontal (Gum) Disease, is very broad. It can range from just gum inflammation to something a lot more serious that can result in damage to the soft tissue and bone—-and those two things are the support for the teeth. If gum disease is to advanced, the result can be teeth loss.
Having gum disease will threaten your oral health, and this disease can have health effects that go way beyond just the mouth. Stopping, slowing, or getting rid of gum disease really depends on how well you choose to care for your mouth.
So what causes Periodontal Disease? Well, our mouths are full of bacteria and this bacteria, along with mucus and so many other particles, will form a sticky (no color) plaque on the teeth. When we brush and floss, it helps to remove the plaque. But if the plaque is not removed, it will harden and form something called tartar. Tartar harbors bacteria, and the thing is, tartar doesn’t come off just by brushing the teeth. Once tartar has built up, a professional cleaning is in order to remove the tartar. If the tartar or plaque is not removed and it lingers on the teeth, the more harmful it will become. When the bacteria in the mouth causes the gums to become inflamed (red, swollen, bleeding), this is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is a very mild form of gum disease. Good news is, it can be reversed with daily brushing and flossing along with seeing your dental hygienist for regular cleanings. When gingivitis is present, the bone and tissue of the teeth have not experienced any loss. Scope Mouthwash Manhattan NY 10016
